Franchises for an E-2 visa
An E-2 treaty investor visa lets a citizen of a country with a US trade treaty live in the US to run a business they have put a substantial amount of their own money into. There is no official list of E-2 franchises, and no minimum: the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual, 9 FAM 402.9-6(D), says no set dollar figure counts as substantial. It weighs what you invest against what the business costs to open: the cheaper the business, the larger the share you are expected to put in. Its own example is that paying for all of a $100K business would normally be substantial.
The E-2 filter keeps the 2,599 brands whose low-end cost to open is $100K or more, so the investment starts at that example’s size. See them all, or add a budget and an industry above.
The same section of the manual sets the other tests an E-2 franchise has to pass:
- The money is committed and at risk: spent or irrevocably committed, though funds held in escrow until the visa is issued can count.
- The business is more than marginal: within five years it can earn more than a minimal living for you and your family, or make a significant contribution to the economy, which in practice means hiring.
- You develop and direct it, normally by owning at least half of it, and nationals of the treaty country own at least half.
Read the State Department’s treaty trader and investor visa page for the treaty countries and how to apply.
Questions
What does “Low end fits” mean?
Each franchise gives a low and a high estimate of the cost to open. “Low end fits” keeps a brand when its low estimate is within your budget, so you could open a smaller or cheaper location. “Whole range fits” keeps it only when even the high estimate is within budget. At $100K, 756 brands here open at the low end and 274 fit the whole range.
What are earnings figures?
Some franchisors publish what their existing locations sell or earn, such as average yearly sales. Others publish nothing. Ticking the box keeps only brands that share figures; open a brand to see exactly what it reports and for which locations.
Why do some brands drop out when I set a royalty limit?
Brands that charge a flat weekly fee, a tiered rate or a share of something other than sales can't be compared on a single percentage, so they leave the list while the royalty filter is on. Their pages explain how the fee works.
What does “on the SBA Franchise Directory” mean?
SBA lenders can only make an SBA-backed loan to a franchise whose brand is on the SBA's Franchise Directory. 1430 of the 3352 brands here were listed as of October 28, 2026. Search the SBA Franchise Directory
