Questions

How often do franchisors update their filing?

Once a year. The FTC Franchise Rule gives a franchisor 120 days after its fiscal year ends to issue a revised disclosure, and material changes in between must be added each quarter. Most brands close their year in December, which is why so many filings are issued between March and May.

Can I rely on an older filing when choosing a franchise?

Use it for history, not for the deal. The franchisor must give you its current disclosure at least 14 calendar days before you sign or pay anything, and fees, costs and terms can change from one year to the next. Comparing an older filing with the new one shows what moved.
