Semi-absentee franchises

Franchises you can own while someone else runs the day: which brands let a trained manager take over daily operations, which don't need you to take part at all, and what that costs.

A semi-absentee franchise is one you own and oversee while a manager runs the daily work. You hire and supervise that manager, watch the numbers, handle the franchisor and plan growth, part-time, while keeping another job or building a group of locations. It is also one of the most oversold ideas in franchising: broker sites list hundreds of “semi-absentee opportunities” without saying what each brand’s own agreement allows.

Every franchisor has to state, in the documents it gives buyers, whether the owner must personally take part in running the business. The answers fall into three groups. Some brands require the owner to run it day to day. Some allow a trained manager to run it instead, usually one who has finished the franchisor’s training. Others say the owner doesn’t have to take part at all. Brands whose terms don’t settle the question aren’t listed below. Each brand’s page gives its answer in the company snapshot, with the page of the filing it comes from.

Franchises where the owner doesn’t have to take part

These 37 brands state that the owner isn’t required to participate personally in running the business, usually provided a trained manager does. They are the closest thing to an investor-owned franchise you will find, and the list is more varied than you might expect: fitness studios such as Fit Body Boot Camp, HOTWORX and CycleBar, big quick-service names such as Pizza Hut, Zaxby's and Wendy's, and service and real-estate brands that start well under $150K.

The cheapest of them, Coverall, RE/MAX, Goosehead Insurance and Caring Transitions, are office, sales or route businesses where the owner normally builds the client list. Not having to take part doesn’t mean the business will grow without you; it means the agreement lets you hire someone to do it. At the other end, ask the restaurant and studio brands whether they accept a first-time owner who won’t work in the business, or only experienced operators opening several locations.

Franchises a trained manager can run

The larger group, 79 brands, lets a manager run the business day to day while the owner stays responsible for it. Most want that manager to complete the franchisor’s training, and some want the owner to attend training too or to work in the business for the first months. This is what most franchise brokers mean by semi-absentee, and it covers far more of the brands a first-time buyer can afford: 42 of them start at $250K or less.

What a semi-absentee franchise costs

Brands that let you step back are not cheaper to open. The ones that don’t require the owner at all are mostly restaurants, food counters and fitness studios, where the building and equipment are the bill, so their typical low-end cost is close to that of owner-run brands. Manager-run brands are cheaper on average because the group includes many service businesses that need only an office or a van.

Brands by who must run the business: typical cost, fee and record
Who runs itBrandsTypical cost to openTypical feeGrew
Owner needn't take part37$413K–$890K$36K52%
A trained manager can run it79$230K–$630K$43K76%
Owner must run it47$410K–$855K$45K76%

Typical figures are medians: the low and high ends of each brand’s cost to open, and the franchise fee. “Grew” is the share of brands with three years of comparable location counts that ended with more US locations than they started with. Manager-run brands grew most often, 76% of them, against 52% of brands that don’t need the owner at all.

The bigger cost is ongoing. A general manager for a restaurant or retail location is a salaried job: the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay of food service managers at $69K a year as of May 2025, before payroll taxes and any bonus. In an owner-run location that money is part of what the owner takes home; in a semi-absentee one it is paid before you earn anything. Build it into any forecast, use the cost calculator to see the loan and royalty you would carry, and plan for a few months of the manager’s pay before the doors open, while they train and hire.

Which industries allow a manager

The kind of business matters more than the brand. In the industries below, the share of brands that let a manager run things ranges from all of them to a minority. Industries are listed from most manager-friendly to least, counting only brands whose terms are clear.

Every brand with clear terms in sports, coffee, smoothie and home care allows a manager. These are scheduled, systemized businesses (kids’ classes, studio memberships, coffee and smoothie counters) where a manager follows the franchisor’s playbook and the owner’s job is hiring and local marketing. In fast food, massage, spa and chicken, most brands want the owner on site. Across all food brands it is close to an even split: 37 of 59 allow a manager.

Franchises that require the owner to run them

The other 47 brands require the owner, or a principal owner, to work in the business day to day, often full-time and on site. Several of the most sought-after franchises are in this group, including Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Taco Bell, Little Caesars, Jersey Mike's and Domino's. These systems are built around an owner behind the counter. If you want to keep your job, they are off the list however good their numbers look.

Owner-run brands: Buffalo Wild Wings, Chick-fil-A, Chicken Salad Chick, Christian Brothers Automotive, Church's Texas Chicken, Culver's, Del Taco, Domino's, Drybar, Duck Donuts, El Pollo Loco, Elements Massage, Express Employment Professionals, H&R Block, Handyman Connection, Hooters, Jack in the Box, Jan-Pro, Jani-King, Jersey Mike's, Jet's Pizza, Kona Ice, Kumon, Lawn Doctor, Little Caesars, Maaco, Massage Envy, Massage Heights, McDonald's, Menchie's, Midas, Mosquito Squad, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Planet Fitness, Plato's Closet, Play It Again Sports, PostNet, Primrose Schools, PuroClean, Shipley Do-Nuts, Sky Zone, Sonic, Taco Bell, Teriyaki Madness, The Goddard School, The Junkluggers, U.S. Lawns.

Before you buy a semi-absentee franchise

Start with the agreement, not the sales pitch. Ask the franchisor to show you the paragraph on owner participation and read what it requires: whether the manager must finish training before opening, whether you must attend training yourself, and whether you must own a minimum share of the business or sign a personal guarantee. Some brands that allow a manager may still want the owner to work in the business while it opens, or to live within reach of the location; ask before you go further.

Then ask about development. Some brands accept semi-absentee owners only if they sign up for several locations, because one location rarely covers a manager and a return. Find out how many units the franchisor expects, by when, and what happens if you miss the schedule. Check that the cash and net worth they ask for allow for the manager’s pay during the ramp-up.

Finally, call owners who run their locations the way you plan to. The franchisor has to give you a list of current and former owners; ask which of them don’t work in their business, and ask those owners how many hours they really spend, how long their managers stay and what they earn after the manager is paid. Their answers are worth more than any list, ours included. Our guide to buying a franchise covers the rest of the process, and SBA franchise loans explains how most buyers finance it.

Questions

Is a semi-absentee franchise passive income?

No. The manager runs the day, but you still hire and replace that manager, read the numbers every week, approve spending and answer to the franchisor. The manager's salary also comes out of the profit before you see any, so a location has to earn noticeably more than an owner-run one to pay you the same.

Can I own a franchise and keep my full-time job?

Yes, if the brand allows a manager to run it and you can afford to pay one from the start. Most owners who do this still spend the first months on site while the business opens and the manager is trained. Brands that require the owner to work in the business, such as Chick-fil-A, McDonald's and Massage Envy, rule it out.

What is the difference between absentee and semi-absentee ownership?

Semi-absentee usually means the owner works on the business part-time, on hiring, finances and local marketing, while a manager handles daily operations. Fully absentee means the owner is an investor who isn't involved at all. Even brands whose agreements don't require the owner to take part expect someone trained to run each location, and an absent owner still answers for it under the agreement.

Do franchisors ask semi-absentee owners to open more than one location?

Some do, because a single location often can't carry a manager's salary and still return enough to the owner. Those brands use a multi-unit development schedule, which commits you to opening a set number of locations by set dates. Ask whether a single-unit semi-absentee owner is accepted before you spend time on the brand.
