Training is a large part of what a franchise fee buys. An independent owner learns the business by trial and error; a franchise owner is meant to be taught the system before opening, from how to cook the menu or quote a job to how to hire, schedule and read the weekly numbers. Each franchisor has to describe its initial training program in the documents it gives buyers, subject by subject, with the hours spent in a classroom and on the job.

This guide uses the hours for the 2,199 brands whose filing gives one main program or one overall total. Where a range is given (“40 to 60 hours”), the low end is used, so each figure is the least training the brand commits to. Another 122 brands list separate programs for owners, managers and staff; their pages show each one.

How much training is typical

The median brand gives 71 hours before opening. Most fall between one and four weeks, but the range runs from a few hours of online modules to three months or more in a working restaurant. More hours isn’t automatically better: a simple service business can be taught in a week, while a full-service kitchen with dozens of recipes and food-safety rules can’t.

Classroom and on-the-job training

Most programs combine a classroom, at headquarters or online, with on-the-job training in an operating location. The typical brand gives 30 hours in a classroom and 34 hours on the job. The classroom covers the system: brand standards, software, marketing, the books. On-the-job hours are where you learn the work itself, and for food and retail brands they are usually the longer half.

Franchises with the most initial training

These brands with at least 100 US locations give the most initial training. Nearly all are restaurants, where owners and managers are expected to work every station in a running kitchen before they open their own, and some programs last several months.

Franchises with the least training

At the other end are brands where owners are agents or salespeople who already know the trade, such as real estate brokerages, and simple service models trained online. Little initial training isn’t a warning sign by itself if the work is simple and the franchisor supports you after opening, but check what ongoing training and field support the brand provides.

Training hours by industry

The typical hours for each industry follow how much there is to learn. Kitchens train the longest, then businesses with licensed or technical work. Home services, fitness and real estate train the least, and lean on ongoing coaching instead.

Training and owners who stay

Among the 816 brands with both training hours and three years of closures, brands that give at least the typical amount of training lose 3.0% of their franchised locations a year; brands that give less lose 3.3%. Part of that is the industries involved, since restaurants both train more and have higher costs that keep owners in place. But it also fits what owners say: the first months are where locations fail, and preparation helps.

Who runs the business matters less than you might expect. Brands that require an owner-operator give a typical 71 hours; brands where a trained manager can run it give 73 hours, because the manager takes the course instead. The franchise failure rates guide shows exits for every industry.

What to ask about training

Ask the franchisor for the training schedule by day, who teaches it and how many trainees are in a class. Ask how many people the franchise fee covers, what each extra trainee costs, and whether a replacement manager can be trained later and at what price. Ask what support follows opening: how long a trainer stays at your location, how often a field consultant visits, and whether there is refresher training.

Then ask current owners whether training prepared them for the first year, what they wish it had covered, and how quickly support answers when something goes wrong. For a first franchise, the best franchises for first-time owners favors brands that train more than most.

Questions

Do I pay for franchise training?

Usually the initial program is covered by the franchise fee, but you pay your own travel, hotel and meals, which brands estimate as part of the cost to open. Of the brands here, 1,255 also list a separate fee for extra training, typically for additional managers, a replacement manager or a second course if you fail the first.

What happens if I fail franchise training?

Most agreements let the franchisor end the agreement, or require you to retake the program at your own cost, if you or your manager don't complete initial training to its standard. Some refund part of the franchise fee when that happens. Read the training and termination sections of the agreement before you sign, since this is one of the few points where a brand can cancel before you open.

Can my manager take the training instead of me?

It depends on who the agreement says must run the business. Brands that let a trained manager run the day usually require that manager, and often the owner as well, to complete initial training before opening. Brands that require an owner-operator expect the owner in the program. Brands a manager can run
